NBC DONATES 400 WHITE CANES TO THE TANZANIA LEAGUE OF THE BLIND
National Bank of Commerce (NBC) today donated 400 White Canes worth 4 million shillings to the Tanzania League of the Blind as part of their ongoing Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. Speaking on behalf of NBC during the handing over ceremony, NBC’s Marketing Manager William Kallaghe said that NBC is a bank that cares and that it made the donation with the intention of reaching out to the community the bank serves. “We are moved by the plight of the blind and as a bank that cares for the community we decided to lend a helping hand and I believe the 400 white canes will go a long way in easing your movement around not forgetting your safety” expounded Mr. Kallaghe. Accepting the donation on behalf of Tanzania League of the Blind officials and members, the league’s Secretary General Mr. Emmanuel Nyuha Simon thanked NBC for their noble gesture because most of their members cannot afford to buy white canes because they are expensive. “We as members of Tanzania League for the Blind, thank NBC for coming to our aide since the white canes are very special to us since they help us in our safety and also we use it to identify ourselves to other road users while we are on the roads” said Mr. Simon. The canes will be distributed evenly across the 95 branches countrywide and will mainly go to individuals who need them the most like women and children especially in the rural areas. The Tanzania League of the Blind was founded in 1964 by students of Manoleo School for the Blind in Tabora and it was officially registered as a Civil Society association in 1972. The league currently has 95 branches countrywide with over twenty thousand registered members but they act as advocates for over one million people who are either totally or partially blind.
