NBC pays 3.2 billion dividend to Government

Dar es Salaam Monday 5, 2008: The National Bank of Commerce (NBC Ltd) today paid dividends of TZS 3.2 BILLION to the Government of Tanzania. Consolidating Holding Corporation (CHC) received the payment on behalf of the government. The Government of Tanzania has a 30% shareholding in NBC Ltd. The handing over ceremony was held at the Headquarters of Consolidating Holding Corporation, Dar es Salaam.

The handing over ceremony was presided by the NBC Managing Director, Christo de Vries and CHC Director General, Edwina Lupembe.

“We at NBC are very proud of our financial performance, particularly during the last year. With the number of plans put in place NBC is able to pay out dividend three times cover, consistent with the attributed income and best practice within commercial banks worldwide” said Christo de Vries NBC Managing Director.  

On receiving the dividend, on behalf of the Government of Tanzania, Edwina Lupembe, Director General CHC said, “when the Government of Tanzania divested a majority stake in NBC Ltd, it was part of the reforms that were taking place in the financial sector aimed at encouraging a wider private ownership.  The Government retained a 30% stake in the bank until a time when it will divest to Tanzanians to economically empower them. This payment means more than additional funds to the Government coffers: it will also shows that this kind of investment pays”.

NBC Ltd. was formed on 1 April 2000 when NBC (1997) Ltd was privatized and Absa Group purchased a 70% majority shareholding. In the last quarter of 2000, Absa Group sold 15% of its stake to the International Finance Corporation (IFC). To date, Absa Group is the majority shareholder with 55% shareholding.  The Government of Tanzania retained a 30% stake of the bank.  

NBC is one of the largest and oldest banks retail bank in Tanzania offering traditional banking services, and a wide variety of products for both retail and corporate customers. NBC has a branch network of 50 branches and over 120 Visa enabled ATMs throughout the country. NBC has employed over 1400 staff.

NBC Hands over Secondary School Library Building in Lindi
13 Dec 2012: THE National Bank of Commerce (NBC) has this weekend handed over a library building to Angaza Secondary School’s administration in Lindi Region as part of the banks Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives. Speaking during a brief ceremony held at the schools compound, NBCs Managing Director Mr. Lawrence Mafuru said that education is one of the banks priority areas in its social responsibility agenda. Six library buildings with a total cost of TZS 70m/- have already been renovated at different secondary schools in Tanzania and will soon be handed over to the respective schools administrations.


NBC Launches Leadership in action, I CARE, Campaign
20 Nov 2012: NBC yesterday launched a customer service campaign which will stretch to the end of November and involve the entire NBC Leadership team. The campaign known as Leadership in action, I CARE, focuses on improving service provision to NBC customers. It is a service focus day for the NBC Leadership Team.


NBC WRAPS UP DABO MSHIKO CAMPAIGN WITH 10 FINAL WINNERS
17 Oct 2012: The National Bank of Commerce (NBC) yesterday rewarded the final round of winners of the Dabo Mshiko deposit campaign which has been running countrywide since July 18th 2012 and has seen 30 lucky winners double their deposits. The Handover was done at the NBC Head Office, where four lucky winners from Dar were given their prize money, while others from upcountry branches were rewarded at their respective branches. This round saw winners emerging from Mwanza, Tanga as well as Songea Regions.


NBC Managing Director, Lawrence Mafuru reinstated after probe
08 Oct 2012: On 19th July 2012, the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Commerce announced that Mr Lawrence Mafuru, the Managing Director of National Bank of Commerce had been requested and accepted to go on leave in order to allow investigations into irregularities allegedly perpetrated at the Bank. The allegations which originated from a whistleblower report raised issues around irregular governance practices, fraud and corruption against the NBC Executive Management team. Driven by the values of the Bank and need to maintain high standards of good corporate governance the Board of Directors of National Bank of Commerce initiated thorough investigations into all the issues raised by the whistleblower with a view of establishing the validity of the allegations for appropriate actions to be taken.
