NBC SCOOPS BEST LOCAL BANK IN AFRICA AWARD

The National Bank of Commerce (NBC) Ltd. was honoured as the “Best Local Bank in Africa” at the African Banker Awards 2009 event held in Istanbul, Turkey, on Tuesday, 6 October 2009 while its parent company Absa Bank was recognised as the “Most Innovative Bank in Africa”. Organised by IC Publications, publishers of the African Banker magazine, and held alongside the World Bank/ IMF annual meetings, the African Banker awards recognise excellence in African banking across several categories. The Awards also seek to celebrate excellence and best practices in African banking by recognising: reforms, rapid modernisation, consolidation, integration and expansion of Africa’s banking and financial system. They also serve to highlight achievements in these areas across Africa and the world at large. Heralding the awards, Christo de Vries NBC Managing Director said The “Best Local Bank in Africa” award recognises NBC’s high level of performance across a wide range of fields. “This is an exciting achievement for all of our stakeholders and we could not have achieved it without the excellent support of all our customers , our colleagues, and of course our shareholders. I have no doubt that the same dedication which has earned us this accolade will take us to even greater heights in the future,” said Mr. de Vries. NBC has geared itself to pursue excellence in product and service delivery across Tanzania and will build on its achievements as it seeks to further establish itself as a dominant force not only in the Tanzanian banking and financial services market but also among its regional and continental peers, the Managing Director said. Commenting on NBC’s Award, Absa Group Chief Executive Maria Ramos said: “Service delivery and impact on national stakeholders were two key aspects which were considered in the judging of this award. We are proud that NBC has proven itself as a driving force in meeting customers’ needs and adhering to world class practices.” Absa was recognised as the Most Innovative Bank in Africa for its string of successive innovations undertaken over the past twelve months. “This is a significant accomplishment for Absa,” added Ramos, “particularly in a global environment where innovation is playing a central role in tailoring financial services around the diverse needs of customers. At Absa, we have also implemented innovative solutions to make banking possible for previously un-banked South Africans”. Ramos said that Absa continues with its ambition to become a Top 10 Globally Innovative Bank by exploring creative business solutions, instilling a culture of innovative thinking across the Group, promoting sustainable profits and building competitive advantage.
