PRESS RELEASE

NBC FREE SME BUSINESS MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING SCHEME
IN   DAR ES SALAAM

14, February 2006

NBC Ltd commenced its Dar es Salaam focused business and management training scheme. This scheme targets selected Tanzanians sole proprietors with small and medium scale Business enterprises (SME’s). The official press conference was held at the Peacock Hotel on the 14th of February 2006. The training scheme will run for three days.

“The NBC business and management scheme is specifically designed to give educational training to help get people started in their own small businesses and also how to maintain them. As part of NBC’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, such skills should be accessible to all who have desires of being sole proprietors. NBC Business Banker, Peter Kingu continues,” NBC has taken the initiative to offer these skills for free, thus changing people’s lives by integrating and giving them the necessary tools for them to enhance their livelihoods. It also enables them to have more expertise in formal business structures, how to handle high and low peaks of such business ventures which is the key to running a lucrative and economical business.”

Tanzania is a country of very few large industries and the majority of business falls into this category. For example, 95% of the industrial sector alone is made up of SME’s and available statistics put the existing figure of 3.2 million employees and 1.3 million businesses in this sector.   In Tanzania, SME’s contribute significantly to job creation and the stimulation of economic growth in both urban and rural areas.  As per the Tanzania government report of 2003 on ‘SME Development policy’ it is estimated that SMEs generate an incredible one third of our total GDP, and employs at least 20% of the Tanzanian labor force.

NBC is a true symbol of a bank for the Tanzanian people. This reflection is represented in its ranking, being Bank of the year and having the largest ATM footprint of 52 VISA-enabled machines and 35 branches. Not only that, accessibility and convenience incorporated with the most modern and innovative banking services. In addition to the specialized and growing number of SME products and services, the bank also offers expertise in all areas of business and personal financial solutions including traditional current and saving accounts, term loans, personal loans, overdrafts as well as a broad range of other international services.

“This enables us to confidently provide hands-on support as business partners to the smallest and the most ambitious of enterprises. A guaranteed customer-friendly, secure and organized service takes all the unnecessary stress out of doing business and managing cash flow in fluctuating markets. Our advice and support makes sure customers get the very best chances to manage their money so that they can make money,” stated Mr. Kingu.

NBC’s CSI (Corporate Social Investment) initiatives aim to support the whole community. The training includes courses, tuition, training materials, accommodation and meals which are offered free, to selected people

Peter Kingu concluded “We believe that through relevant experience and support, we at NBC can add value to the sector that is the most feasible key to the economic success to   Tanzania.”
